A few months ago my PS3 decided to get the YLoD(lucky for me it was two days after I broke my ankle ;) )

So seeing as I couldn’t do anything, I decided to take it apart and replace the thermal compound (gilksy guide.) I put it all back together and it still had the YLoD.

Has anyone done this before; sent it to Sony, and had them fix it for you, or did they ship it back saying they wouldn’t fix it?
I want to know if you have replaced the thermal compound, not just if you sent it back.

FYI – It was purchased back in Aug 2007 (still have original receipt) So the warranty(1 year) is long expired.

You opened the console and they’ll know that immediately once its in their hands. They’ll send it back to you and refund the $150 if they charged you already.

The service is not designed to fix your repairs. You are not supposed to service the console yourself and you agreed not to when you bought the PS3. Any warranty for any product (even paid services like Sony’s PS3 repair) becomes void if the consumer attempts repair or modification of the product.

EDIT: The only thing that expired is your free warranty. The paid service is still valid. Well, not anymore, since you opened the console.

And yes, many have proven that Gilksy’s guide is only a temporary fix (usually only lasts a few months at best).

I know sending it to Sony would be a the safest way to go but I heard that others could fix it for a lower price, like on eBay. Has anyone got theirs fixed through ebay because I dont know if it’s trustworthy or not. I’m not sure of any other alternatives so if you know any could you suggest me some but nothing like “Just buy a new one, or an X-box.”

Oh yeah I know I could try fixing it myself but I really dont want to take that risk.

Remember you get what you pay for, if you send it in to a second hand shop & they screw somehitng up sony wont take it to fix. Most places will fix it for $100 & they give more or less no warranty, sony will fix it for $150 & they give you a 90 day warranty. In the end its your call, but when i had my problem i caled Sony, the refurb sony sent me was dying in around 60 days & they sent me another unit out with a completely new 90 day warranty.

no, this cannot be repaired, unlike the ‘ring of death’ on the xbox 360. i would suggest investing in one of these OR one of the new ps3′s, the slims. you can pick one up for about £300, and they are much quieter and use less energy. however, the yellow light of death is still an issue.

Hello, I have tried to repair my PS3 40GB FAT model after it randomly turned off and would not turn back on due to YLOD. I bought a PS360 repair kit online with thermal paste, copper shims and reflowing liquid and followed a tutorials on youtube.

it wasn’t a very difficult process so I assume I did not get anything wrong but the PS3 still has YLOD. I’m wondering if there are other causes of YLOD that I should know about?

Hey, a couple months ago my PS3 got the yellow light of death and I have been saving money to buy a new one. But now I am thinking if I should just repair it. A brand new one costs close to $300. I have about $150. Is it really worth it to save another $150? And also, I got the ylod while playing Black Ops so that is stuck in the old one too.

To repair an YLoD on PS3?
    Hello to all.
Yesterday my conceited PS3 made a YLoD (Yellow Light of Death). It is characterized by the fact that the console does not start any more, when I light(switch on) him(it) the light ignites in green then yellow then green then red and finally flashes in red. This is the symptomes of the YLoD.

The PS3 conceited is very numerous in beings got(touched), there is a tutoriel today showing one by one the various manipulations. (Here: http: // http://www.ps3gen.fr/tuto-comment-reparer-ps3-apres-yellow-light-of-death-ylod-ps3gen-article-5469-1.html).

it is the only manipulation which walks(works) to put on has new his(her, its) PS3 (the YLoD does not mean the death of the console but the stake on the alert of the console to avoid the death of the console exactly.) even if this repair prolongs mostly the life of the console only of a few months, it sometimes happens that the repair really likes for a long time. (Has condition to be made well.)

Then i’ I would like knowledge so some of you have already repaired they the same their PS3 YLoD, how long the console has resisted before of relapse towards a new YLoD, and I am opened to any remarks and advice that you can give me.

One thank you beforehand in all and in all.

I received the yellow light of death about a year ago and have since bought a new ps3. When I got YLOD I sent it to sony for a repair costing £150, 4 months after that I received it again, this prompted me to repair it myself and followed Gilsky’s repair guide on youtube to the letter. The PS3 was repaired, then an hour later it failed again, so it did work. I have since tried to repair it twice both failing each time, just to get YLOD again. This time it it turns on with the same symptoms on YLOD but the fan becomes very loud upon truning off.

I have replaced the hard disk and still hasn’t worked.

It is a 60Gb PS3 and I want to repair it form my girlfriend as she lacks anything to do at her house apart from jigsaws at 18 years old ^^

I have not moved the motherboard after re flow etc, any ideas?

    hey there,

you really need tutorial guide to repair the ylod, watching a tutorial video on youtube may not work all the time unless you want to hurt your ps3. there are a lot of DIY repair guide on the internet that you can use but be careful when you are choosing the right one!!

    Good luck man!!

Ok so my PS3 is dead….

Is there a cheap way of getting it repaired?

  16. Bob says:

    Dont listen to these idiots

If your ps3 has the ylod, you have 2 options:
    1. Try to fix it yourself
-If you want to fix it yourself, you have the risk of damaging it further and sometimes the fixes dont really work…..
    2. Send it in to sony.
-If you want your ps3 fixed, it will cost $150.00, but currently for launch models only, as far as i can tell, they are doing a ps3 exchange, where you pay $100 and exchange your launch ps3 for the newer slim and it comes with a 90 day warranty.

Bottom line, if u have the ylod, exchange it. I had a 60gb launch model as well, it got the ylod after christmas, and sony sent me a ps3 slim a week ago. Its supposed to come monday. They also send the disc back with it. Btw, i opened up the ps3 3 times, disassembled it, and they still accept it.

sony will exchange the ps3 regardless if it was opened. Your’re out of luck with the saved files tho, unless you can get the ps3 on.

Just call customer service at 1800345SONY (i think, double check in case im wrong)

    Good luck!
